Dragon[]

Dragons (ドラゴン, Doragon?) are large winged reptiles of great power and ferocity that are capable of breathing fire. One resided in the Wano Country long ago.

The powers and abilities of a dragon are so strong that not only can it destroy a single town (under the control of D.R. and Cyrano with the use of a Dragon Horn) and bring terror to the public, but killing one made the samurai Ryuma a legend, and stories about him are still passed down after generations. The dragon Ryuma faced was voiced by Kazuya Nakai in Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation.

Dragons were first mentioned by Hogback in the One Piece storyline during the Thriller Bark Arc, where he revealed to Zoro the story of Ryuma and his legendary slaying of a dragon long ago which the latter took in with much skepticism.

Dr. Vegapunk was revealed to have created his own artificial dragons to guard Punk Hazard, which appear like Western dragons. He had tried thirteen times to create his own dragons, but each one failed except for Dragon Number Thirteen and Dragon Number Twenty-One. The Straw Hats encountered these two, both of which were incredibly strong, and one possessing great speed as well. However, both were eventually killed by Kin'emon and the Straw Hats.

There are also wingless Eastern dragons introduced during the Punk Hazard Arc. Kaidou is revealed to have eaten the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu that allows him to become one, specifically the Azure Dragon. His dragon form is also perfectly capable of simulating flight via "Flame Clouds". However, his fierce personality and destructive abilities are more similar to that of the Western dragons, being capable of breathing fire and destroying large areas. Momonosuke also ate Vegapunk's failed Artificial Devil Fruit, which was meant to duplicate Kaidou's Devil Fruit, allowing him to turn into a small pink Chinese dragon.

There are also two anime exclusive dragon species, the Sennenryu and the Seahorse Dragon.

Horn Eaters (ツノクイ, Tsuno Kui) are a type of creature featured prominently in the third One Piece movie. They are large herbivorous armadillo-like rhinos that will aggressively attack any horned creature within sight, even if said creature happens to have fake horns, as seen with Luffy (Usopp had him garbed in a ridiculous costume with antlers included). They are used by Battler to herd the various other horned animals on O-Kan Island in order to chop their horns off.

Despite their frightening appearance and strength, they are relatively docile animals, unless aggravated. The females have a particular trait at the bottom of their feet that makes it possible to tell their sex based on footprints. Their diet includes mirabara grass. Baby banbarabas are about the size of an average monkey. According to Nefertari Vivi, Baroque Works attempted to use the banbarabas for offense, but their docile personalities made them unsuitable.[3]

The three Deadline Dragons that attacked Luffy and Toriko.

A Deadline Dragon (乄切めき, Meki Ryū?) is an "Editorial Beast" (編集獣類, Henshū Jūrui?) found in the waters on Gourmet Island with a Capture Level of 1, the lowest numerical score. It is a dragon resembling a Chinese dragon with at least six arms. Three attacked Luffy and Toriko while they were on the island, but were easily defeated by Toriko.

The Deadline Dragons seem to be based on real-life Jump editors, with each wearing headbands signifying a different editor's name. Specifically included are Kosuke Yahagi, the original editor of Naruto and eventual Editor-in-Chief of Jump SQ; Koike, eventual editor at Shonen Jump+; and Hiroyuki Nakano, eventual Editor-in-Chief of Weekly Shonen Jump.

The Deadline Dragons were designed by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro.

A Pig In a Fox In a Tiger (トラノイヲカルキツネノイヲカルブタ, Tora no i wo karu Kitsune no i wo karu Buta?) is a mammal beast found on Gourmet Island with an unknown Capture Level. One attacked Luffy and Toriko while they were on the island, but it was easily defeated by Luffy.

It's name is likely a pun on the Japanese idiom "a fox borrowing a tiger's menace" (虎の威を借る狐, tora no i wo karu kitsune?), referring to a person without authority acting as if they have it.

The Pig In a Fox In a Tiger was designed by Eiichiro Oda.

Barbecue Pig[]

Barbecue Pigs.

Barbecue Pigs.

Barbecue Pigs (マルヤキブタ, Maruyaki Buta?) are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 1. They are large, constantly roasting boars, who use their roasting backs to burn those they feel threatened by. The angrier they get, the more they heat up, eventually burning themselves and ruining their meat for consumption. Despite their imposing nature, they're actually herbivores, and they can be calmed by feeding them herbs and Ghost Truffles.

Barbecue Pigs are native to Hungry-La Island. Their meat apparently pairs well with a drop of Surprise Orange Juice.[5]

Hungry-La Bird[]

A Hungry-La Bird.

A Hungry-La Bird.

Hungry-La Birds (ハングリラ鳥, Hanguri-ra Tori?) are legendary birds said to reside on Hungry-La Island. They are bird beasts with a Capture Level of 3. Despite their relatively low capture levels, their mastery of the air, steel-strength plumage, and incredible speed make them powerful creatures, causing trouble even for Luffy, Sanji, and Toriko. Additionally, its wing flaps are powerful enough to cause gusts of wind, themselves strong enough to force others back and to the ground.

A world-famous ingredient, the deliciousness of their meat is said to have caused a man who tasted it to swim through the ocean, hoping to find Hungry-La Island so he could taste it again. It's an ingredient so rare that Toriko, himself an internationally renowned Gourmet Hunter, considered adding it to his Full Course Menu.

However, the truth of the legends surrounding the Hungry-La Bird are actually caused by a mistaken scribe sometime in the past, who incorrectly transcribed the kanji island (?) as bird (?). the legends, instead, were initially about Hungry-La Island itself.[5]

Narwhal Bear[]

A Narwhal Bear.

Narwhal Bears (一角ベアー, Ikkaku Beā?, Crunchyroll: "Uni-horn Bear"; Netflix: "Unihorn Bear") are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 2 native to Hungry-La Island. They are massive brown bears with a single horn sticking out of their forehead. They are generally considered unfit for eating, with tough meat.[5]

Cocoala[]

A Cocoala.

A Cocoala.

Cocoalas (ココアラ, Kokoara?) are beasts with a Capture Level of 3. Omnivorous, they are generally docile, making their nests around Multi-Fruit Trees to store their food; however, despite their docile nature, they will always obey the commands of the more powerful Knock-Out Koala, which they evolve into when they reach adulthood. While their meat doesn't taste good enough to eat, they have top-quality cocoa beans growing out of their backs.

They are native to Hungry-La Island.[5]

Caste Leo[]

A Caste Leo.

Caste Leo (カーステ レオ, Kāsute Reo?, Netflix: "Castelion") are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 4. They are large lions with manes made of castella. Their sponge cake manes act as natural speakers, allowing them to release sound shockwaves when they roar, powerful enough to throw others backwards.

They are native to Hungry-La Island.[5]

Knock-Out Koala[]

Knock-Out Koalas (ドツクゾコアラ, Dotsukuzo Koara?) are marsupial beasts with a Capture Level of 5. Large koalas with cocoa growing out of their backs, they are the adult forms of the Cocoala. An extremely large Knock-Out Koala lived on Hungry-La Island.[5]

Its name is likely derived from dotsuku (ど突く?), meaning "to hit" or "to punch".

Spring Shark[]

A Spring Shark.

A Spring Shark.

Spring Sharks (ハルサメ, Haru Same?) are fish beasts with a Capture Level of 10. They are long, white sharks. They glow during the spawning season, with a stronger glow indicating they have more eggs. Their glow is said to be as warm and bright as the spring sun, lending them their name.[6]

Kung-Fu Myna[]

Kung-Fu Mynas (キュウカンフーチョウ, Kyū Kanfū Chō?, English versions: "Kung-Fu Myna Birds") are bird beasts with a Capture Level of 20. Native to Tou-Chuka Island, they are human-sized mynas with the ability to mimic movements they've seen, an extension of mynas' ability to mimic sounds. Additionally, they have the ability to understand human speech.

Kung-Fu Myna eat seafood, primarily Lycho Sharks and Star Abalone. Like Kung-Fu Dugongs, they honor and follow those who have defeated them.[6]

Their name is a pun on the Japanese word for myna (九官鳥, kyūkanchō?), by extending the kan into the word "kung-fu" (功夫, kanfū?).

Mangronves (饅具龍舞マングロンブ, Manguronbu?, Netflix subs: "Mangragon") are plant beasts with an unknown Capture Level. Living mangrove trees, they reside in seawater, with a group of them living in the reservoir atop Tou-Chuka Island's central mountain. They're known to grow fruit that look like Chinese dumplings, which are actually the Seafood Fruit.

The heads of Mangronves have the ability to spit out water and endlessly regenerate, making them particularly tough opponents for Devil Fruit users.[6]

Banjan Tiger[]

A Banjan Tiger.

A Banjan Tiger.

Banjan Tigers (トラバンジャン, Tora Banjan?, English versions: "Banjyan Tigers") are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 29. They are large tigers with rich, ripened chili paste oozing out of them. Residing in hot environments, their chili paste acts as the "summer" part of Deep Sea Fever's cure, with at least one Banjan Tiger living on the summer floor of the Mush Room.

When Banjan Tigers run too fast, they eventually melt into a thick slab of chili paste; tricking them into running is therefore the primary strategy employed by those who want to obtain it.[6]

Octohorn[]

An Octohorn.

Octohorns (八角獣, Hakkakujū?, Netflix subs: "Octocorn"), also known as Eight-Horned Boars (猪八角, Chohakkaku?), are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 29. They are giant, pink boars, with an eight-horned herb atop their forehead. Living in warm environments, their horns act as the "autumn" part of Deep Sea Fever's cure, with at least one Octohorn living on the autumn floor of the Mush Room.[6]

Raochutan[]

A Raochutan.

A Raochutan.

Raochutans (ラオチュータン, Raochūtan?) are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 32. They are orangutans who love raochu. Perpetually drunk due to their love of raochu, they are essentially accidental masters of the "Drunken Fist", unpredictable martial arts aided by the unnatural and unsteady movements of someone's too drunk to move properly. Additionally, they get stronger the more raochu they drink. A Raochutan lives in the Mush Room, near the Raochu Spring.[6]

Their name is a portmanteau of "raochu" and "orangutan".

Carat Sizzled Cattle[]

Carat Sizzled Cattle (カラットジューウシ, Karatto Jū Ushi?) is an extremely rare cattle. Its meat endlessly produces meat broth, and its bones are made of diamond thousands of carats in size. The meat from a Carat Sizzled Cattle was the ultimate prize of the IGO's Number One Under Heaven Food Tournament, a prize so great it was able to bring in Gourmet Hunters, pirates, and martial artists from around the world.[10]

The "sizzled" (ジュー, ?) in its name is derived from the Japanese onomatopoeia for sizzling food, jūjū (じゅうじゅう?).

Konna Antlion[]

A Konna Antlion.

A Konna Antlion.

Konna Antlions (コンナノアリジゴク, Konna no Arijigoku?, Netflix subs: "Cantbefair Antlion"; English dub: "You’re Kidding Me Ant-Lion") are insect beasts with a Capture Level of 40. They are giant, monstrous antlions, with three red eyes, large black pincers, and a brown mane. A Konna Antlion interrupted the Number One Under Heaven Food Tournament, immediately eliminating most of the contestants in its sand trap.[10]

Konna (こんな?) roughly translates to "such a" or "what", indicating shock or disbelief. The Konna Antlion could therefore be translated as "Such-an-Antlion" or "What-an-Antlion". The monstrous form of the Konna Antlion may also be a play on the Japanese word for antlion (アリジゴク, arijigoku?), which contains the Japanese word for "hell" (地獄, jigoku?).

Full-Bellied Baboon[]

A Full-Bellied Baboon.

A Full-Bellied Baboon.

Full-Bellied Baboons (マンプクヒヒ, Manpukihihi?) are mammal beasts with a Capture Level of 45. While they appear aggressive and intimidating, they are peaceful once fed, and can be easily appeased by giving them a good meal. Setsuno describes them "Gourmet Hunters of the forest".[10]

Their name is a portmanteau of manpuku (満腹?), meaning "full stomach", and hihi (狒々?), meaning "baboon".

Akami[]

Akami (アカミィ, Akamī?, English dub: "Akamee"), also called "Gluttons of the Sea" (海の大食漢, Umi no Taishokukan?, English dub: "Gluttons of the Sea/Gluttons of the Deep"), are fish beasts (English dub: "Piscine Beast") with an unknown Capture Level. Initially a small flying red ball, Akami can absorb the life force and ki of those around them using their tentacles, as well as convert any non-fatal damage they take into strength. In their final form, Akami have the power to absorb freestanding ki at a faster rate than even Goku's Spirit Bomb buildup, and they gain the ability to shoot energy waves from their mouths. In addition to their standard form, Akami have three evolutions:

  • The Medium Tuna (中トロー, Chū Torō?, English dub: "Medium Toona"; Netflix subs: "Medium Fatty Tuna") form, larger than their first. Their tentacles begin to act as legs, and their fins expand into long, wing-like appendages.
  • The Big Tuna (ビッグトロー, Biggu Torō?, English dub: "Big Toona"; Netflix subs: "Big Fatty Tuna") form, again bigger. Their tentacles grow thicker, and they return to their original round shape, though with their wings intact. This form is said to be 100 times more power than the Medium Tuna, with a flavor that's 100 times stronger.
  • The Super Big Tuna (スーパービッグトロー, Sūpā Biggu Torō?, English dub: "Super-Big Toona"; Netflix subs: "Super Big Fatty Tuna") form, their largest. They develop into a serpentine- or eel-like body with dark purple skin, and their tentacles grow incredibly large, now with mouths and fangs of their own.

The threat of an Akami is so large that the IGO held the entire Number One Under Heaven Food Tournament just to lure a wild one into an environment with strong fighters. Mansam and Toriko speculated that if they didn't handle the wild Akami when they had the chance, it could one day grow to eat everything on the planet.[10]

Translation and Dub Issues

Only a single Akami appears in the special, leading to confusion around whether "Akami" is an individual or a species. Fan translations of the special treat the fish as an individual called "Akami", but the English dub treats it as a species, referring to it as "an Akami". While it remains unclear, Toriko demonstrates knowledge of the Akami's taste and evolutionary stages in advance, implying it belongs to a known species that has been hunted before.

Tomahawk Spiny Lobster

The Tomahawk Spiny Lobster (トマホーク・伊勢ロブスター, Tomahōku Ise Robusutā?) is a very rare, gigantic lobster most likely from the East Blue based on it being listed in “East Blue Ingredients Encyclopedia”.

It is able to live in fresh and saltwater habitats. Instead of pincers on its arms, it has boast razor-sharp blades in the shape of Tomahawk axes. It hides in rivermouth slit deposits and uses its blades to hunt fish passing by. Its incredibly tough upper shell has been used as wartime armor and in pre-war victory rituals. In cooking, it is a very difficult ingredient to prepare that even first-rated chefs from top-class restaurants would struggle with this ingredient.

Draconic Super-Fillet Salmon

Draconic Super-Fillet Salmon

The Draconic Super-Fillet Salmon (ドラゴニック・超フィレサーモン, Doragonikku Chō-Fire Sāmon?), also called the "Dragon Salmon" (龍鮭, Ryūjake?), is a species of salmon with a long sinuous body that brings to mind the imaginary dragon. They only gather during mating season, swimming in schools of hundreds. Their flesh is considered more tender and delicious than beef tenderloin and is thought to bring good luck to those who eat it.

Its stomach is its most tender part and is particularly sensitive to a blade; opening it up successfully requires a perfectly straight singular cut that cannot be even a millimeter off. The slightest hesitation or waver will trigger its defense mechanism, causing it to pop like a balloon and explode all of its delicious flesh into useless scraps. Sanji failed to cook it using his own kitchen knives. He succeeded by using one of Zoro's swords, which had the length, sharpness, and sturdiness he needed.

They bury themselves underground, resembling a normal carrot in the ground; however, when picked, they reveal their full form. Like their name describes, they look like very tall, extremely muscular people with carrot stems on top of their heads. Despite their human appearance, they are not intelligent.[17] The only known example of the species is Dareyorimo Tsuyoi, who was later identified as an alien[18]; it is unclear if Funkorogasun simply misidentified Tsuyoi's species, or if Macho Man Who Looks Like an Old Man With a Carrot Growing on his Head originate from space.
