An assassin, sometimes known as a hitman, is a person who is trained to kill other people, normally for political or personal reasons. Oftentimes they work as independent agents for hire.

Overview

Assassins exist across the world, both independently and as part of larger organizations. Most of the time, they hold a secondary occupation that may have natural synergy with their assassination skills, such as mercenaries (ex: Yeti Cool Brothers) and bounty hunters (ex: Daz Bonez). Unlike a combatant, assassins generally prefer more sophisticated, indirect approaches to dealing with their targets (wearing disguises, staging ambushes, employing poison, etc.) and are more likely to be formally trained in combat instead of self-taught, making them very powerful fighters compared to your standard soldier or pirate, who tend to favor more straightforward tactics. For those reasons, assassins can act as competent undercover agents if needed.

As assassins are considered criminals for the most part, they may receive bounties if their infamy rises to a certain level, regardless of their involvement with the far more common and wanted pirates. That being said, the World Government does employ several assassins under their Cipher Pol units. Unlike the Marines, Government-associated assassins maintain a low profile and rarely become known to the public at large, thanks to the highly questionable nature of their missions.

However, they ended up killing twenty extra people thanks to Fukurou revealing his team's presence and their intentions to the town.[17] This strongest generation was dismissed as criminals when their superior, Spandam, framed them for the debacle at Enies Lobby.[18]
