Kalgara[2] was a warrior of the Shandia who lived on Jaya around 400 years ago. He was renowned among his people as the "Great Warrior of Shandora" and feared as the "Demon of Shandora" by outsiders.[1] During his life, he befriended the later infamous explorer Mont Blanc Noland, and the two promised to meet again. However, both men met tragic ends before this promise could be fulfilled.[4]

Kalgara died in battle against the Skypiean forces after a part of Jaya was sent to the sky by the Knock Up Stream.[4] Until his final moments, he regretted being unable to ring the Golden Bell to signal their presence to Noland. His legacy lived on after his death, as a statue of him was erected in the Hidden Cloud Village.[5] His bloodline also continued through his daughter Mousse,[6] and Wyper is his descendant.[7]

Appearance

Kalgara's most striking feature was his long mass of red hair that extended down to his knees. He had red tattoos on both shoulders and, like all Shandia, a pair of small white wings extending from his back. Unlike his descendant who almost always keeps a stoic face, Kalgara was noticeably savage looking, with his wide, crazy eyes and a wide, mad grin making him more of a "demon" than his own descendant. He also had a muscular heavily built physique.

He wore purple laced-leg pants (similar in style to those worn by Native Americans) under a grass skirt.

Personality

Kalgara was a tremendously loyal man who cared about serving and protecting his tribe above all else. Whenever the Shandia faced any sort of threat, Kalgara was always the first to pick up arms and attack the enemy responsible with no hesitation. Kalgara often demonstrated a bloodthirsty disposition against opponents, saying he would "eliminate" them, though with encroaching sailors he generally appeared to allow them to escape alive if they left their belongings behind.[1][8]

Kalgara's devotion to his tribe extended to faithfully keeping the customs surrounding worship of their gods and ancestors and carrying on the legacy of the original settlers of Shandora.[9] He never questioned the words of the Pantri, and firmly believed that harm would fall on the Shandia if the gods were displeased. Though it brought him no happiness to sacrifice his daughter to the gods, Kalgara's faith in his tribe's customs led him to believe this process was essential and that it was improper to go about the sacrifice selfishly, even reprimanding Mousse for showing trepidation towards her death once Noland spared her. Because of Kalgara's devotion, he was gravely offended when Noland cast his tribe's sacrificial customs as small-minded and barbaric. Though he normally tried to swiftly dispatch enemies, Kalgara showed a sense of humor during his conflict with Noland after judging the explorer's tribulations to be the wrath of the gods, as he challenged Noland to overcome these tribulations himself and kept watch as the explorer fruitlessly attempted to do so.[8][10]

With that said, Kalgara was not an unreasonable man; indeed, he showed the willingness to change his beliefs and practices if he had reason to believe that an alternative method would achieve a worthwhile result. This led him to assist Noland in delivering his cure to the village, and even kill a "god" in the process, once Noland laid out the clear reasoning for believing in his ability to cure the deadly plague.[10] Once it was made clear that the village had found its path to salvation without the need for human sacrifice, Kalgara was willing to abandon the practice, and although a misunderstanding regarding the Ancestor Trees nearly caused Kalgara to turn his back on Noland's ideal of "progress" later on, he likewise understood the necessity of cutting the trees down once the reason was explained to him.[11]

When not actively upholding his warrior duties, Kalgara showed himself to be a kind and caring man. Though he had trouble being friendly with most people, Kalgara's bond with Noland showed that he was a devoted friend, committed to upholding his word with the same fervor as his devotion to the Shandia's traditions.[9] Even as he found his tribe suddenly displaced into the sky and under attack, Kalgara did not waver in his determination to uphold his promise to reunite with Noland, and he passed on this calling to subsequent generations of Shandia.[4]

Family

Kalgara had a wife named Herb and a daughter named Mousse. He cared greatly for his daughter, but was forced to accept her human sacrifice for the sake of the tribe, even though this caused him intense inner turmoil. When Noland developed a cure for Tree Fever and Mousse was spared, Kalgara hugged her and shed tears of relief.[10]

Kalgara also developed a bond with his son-in-law Seto, as they both held strong feelings of gratitude towards Noland and often went to ring the Golden Bell together.[4]

Mont Blanc Noland

Kalgara and Mont Blanc Noland were initially bitter enemies due to Noland slaying Kashigami. Kalgara considered Noland a god-killer who would bring disaster to his village, and was entertained when Noland was caught in an accident that Kalgara believed to be the gods' judgement.[8] However, Noland's words and honesty eventually got through to Kalgara and he began to trust Noland, saving his life from the Child of Kashigami.[10] After Noland cured the Shandia of Tree Fever, Kalgara and Noland became close friends, a first for Kalgara who had never been particularly friendly with anyone from his own village.[9] Kalgara even offered Noland the hand of his daughter, although Noland refused due to already having a family back in Lvneel Kingdom.[12]

A schism was sparked between the two when Noland and his crew cut down the white trees which the Shandia believed to house the spirits of their ancestors. At this time, Kalgara's opinion of Noland briefly reverted to that of disdain and anger.[9] However, when the misunderstanding was resolved, Kalgara apologized and tearfully promised Noland that he would continue ringing the "Light of Shandora" until Noland returned.[11]

Abilities and Powers

During his time, Kalgara was regarded as the Shandia's strongest warrior, and he continues to be revered by the tribe's current generation over four centuries later. Sailors whom Kalgara attacked regarded him as "inhuman" and a "demon",[1] and the other Shandia warriors were shocked when Mont Blanc Noland was able to withstand Kalgara in combat.[8]

Kalgara possessed exceptional physical might, being capable of wielding a giant iron ball that could devastate a large ship with a single strike.[1] He could withstand the likewise physically prodigious Noland in single combat,[8] swiftly kill Kashigami's child just by impaling it through the head once,[10] and singlehandedly catch a shark-sized fish underwater with just his spear.[9] It is indicated that Kalgara was capable of ringing the giant Golden Bell by himself,[4] whereas several tribe members were needed to do so otherwise.[11]

Kalgara was extremely fast, as he could cover great distances in a short time to overtake fleeing intruders, and swiftly cut down multiple men in seconds.[1] He showed enough endurance to immediately race back to his village and begin fighting the Skypieans upon the Shandia's displacement to the sky, despite being short of breath in the higher altitude, and was said to have died honorably in the ensuing battle.[4][5]

Weapons

Kalgara's primary weapon was a spear, which he used to cut down intruders, hunt animals, and cross blades with Noland. He could also throw it with considerable accuracy, having once nicked Noland's cheek with it from afar as a warning shot.[11]

He also wielded a massive iron ball attacked to a giant chain which dwarfed him in size, using it to destroy intruders' ships.[1]

Kalgara fights Noland for stopping the sacrifice of Mousse.

During his life four centuries ago, Kalgara defended Jaya against all foreigners who stepped foot on it, being capable of destroying entire ships singlehandedly.[1] When Kalgara was 35, his village was plagued by Tree Fever, which the Shandia believed was an evil spirit. While on a hunting expedition, Kalgara encountered Seto weeping after contracting the disease. The Pantri Chiya commanded that a maiden be sacrificed to the gods to ward off the plague, and Kalgara watched as his daughter Mousse was brought to the altar as an offering to the snake deity Kashigami. However, the foreign explorer Mont Blanc Noland arrived and slew Kashigami, declaring there was no need for Mousse to die.[13] Kalgara immediately moved to attack Noland, and as the two of them clashed, Kalgara tossed a knife toward his daughter so she could sacrifice herself. Noland hit the knife out of Mousse's hand, but this allowed Kalgara to impale him through the shoulder. Noland pleaded for the Shandia to allow him to deliver the cure for their plague and cease their practice of human sacrifice thereafter, and the chief Coburn allowed him to go on this mission, though the Shandia would kill Noland's crew if he did not succeed by evening the next day.

That night, Kalgara was in Coburn's hut as several Shandia warriors questioned the chief's judgement. Kalgara declared that he would not wait until the next evening to kill Noland if he sensed even the slightest danger to the village. He then walked outside and found Seto sitting by the door; the boy surprised Kalgara by revealing he had been cured, and he then asked what "progress" was. The next morning, an earthquake struck Jaya; believing that this was a clear sign of the gods' wrath, Kalgara immediately went to find and kill Noland. He found the explorer trapped in a fissure, but when Noland declared his intent to immediately return to the village, Kalgara decided to hold off on killing him in order to watch him struggle to escape.[8]

The day passed, but Noland could not get out. He challenged the Shandia's heartless disregard for human lives in their sacrifices, and Kalgara assaulted him for this notion, revealing he had no joy in sacrificing his daughter but that the Shandia had always been guided by their Pantri's communication with the gods. A giant snake then appeared which was smaller than Kashigami; Kalgara judged it to be the snake's offspring and said it had come to bring judgement on Noland. Noland then revealed that his homeland had been plagued by the Tree Fever in the past, but found a cure which he held in his hand. This assurance swayed Kalgara enough to kill Kashigami's offspring, and he asked Noland if the explorer could save his village. Kalgara got Noland out of the fissure and brought him back to the village right before his crew was executed, and Noland swiftly began curing the villagers with his Conine medicine. With a sacrifice no longer needed, Kalgara tearfully embraced Mousse.[10]

Kalgara helped nurse Noland back to health, and by just nine days later the explorer was healthy again. The two men quickly formed a strong friendship, and discovered Kashigami's small grandchild. Kalgara took Noland and his crew to Shandora, giving the explorers permission to take as much gold from it as they wished. He explained that the Shandia rang a giant Golden Bell, the "Light of Shandora", in order to guide their ancestors' souls back home. For the next month, Kalgara and Noland partook in many activities together, and Kalgara once proposed that Noland marry his daughter. However, their friendship was shaken when Noland's crew cut down the Ancestor Trees. Not knowing the reason for this grave offense, Kalgara withdrew into Shandora and said he never wished to see Noland again.[9]

That night, Noland entered the city to try and talk, but Kalgara nicked his cheek with a spear and threatened to kill Noland if he saw the explorer again. Because of the loss of the Ancestor Trees, Kalgara believed that ringing the Golden Bell was pointless, and he regretted accepting Noland's progress. However, on the day of Noland's departure, Mousse came into the village revealing that the explorers had cut down the Ancestor Trees because they had been infected with Tree Fever. She begged her father to set things right with his friend, and Kalgara raced to the shore. He made it right as the explorers were heading off, and while the rest of the Shandia rang the Golden Bell, Kalgara told his friend to return to Jaya someday, saying that they would ring the bell to guide him. In response, Noland promised that he would return one day.[11]

Four years later, Kalgara accompanied Seto, who had married Mousse, to ring the Golden Bell. While they were in the city, a Knock Up Stream blasted their portion of Jaya into the sky, where it landed on Sea Clouds near the Sky Island Skypiea. Upon returning to the village, Kalgara saw a group of warriors led by the "God" Ubau coming to conquer the land, and marshaled the Shandia warriors to fight back. Despite struggling to breathe, Kalgara and the warriors did not hesitate to rise up into battle, and in an internal monologue Kalgara expressed his determination to keep his promise to Noland at any cost. Wishing to keep ringing the bell for Noland to hear it, Kalgara repeatedly declared that they must bring back the Light of Shandora.[4] However, Kalgara soon met his end in the battle before he could find the bell again.[5]

Legacy

Kalgara has been revered by the subsequent generations of Shandia, who erected a statue in honor of the warrior and passed down his declaration to ring the Golden Bell for the next four centuries, even as it remained lost.[5] The Golden Bell finally rang again 413 years after Shandora's displacement, and the current Shandia Chief expressed hope that Kalgara's spirit was hearing it. Kalgara's promise to Noland was fulfilled, as Noland's descendant Mont Blanc Cricket heard the bell ringing from Jaya below.[14]
