The Tree of Knowledge was a gigantic 5,000-year-old tree located on the island of Ohara which served as a library and a hub for archaeologists from around the world.[2] It was destroyed by the World Government via a Buster Call twenty-two years before the present.
The tree was used by archaeologists who were able to decipher the Poneglyphs. As research of the Poneglyphs is forbidden by the World Government, they sent CP9 to attack the archaeologists and called forth a Buster Call. When Spandine, the chief of CP9 back then, activated the Buster Call to destroy Ohara, the tree fell and crushed almost everything. It is here where Nico Robin learned to read this language, that still remained unbeknownst to the other archaeologists. Its library was the oldest known structure in the world.
Aside from the archaeologists research of the poneglyph located there, the Tree of Knowledge contained thousands of historic resources that were gathered from all across the globe over hundreds of years. After the Tree of Knowledge caught fire during the Buster Call, the archaeologists desperately threw books into a nearby lake and their efforts saved enough books to fill up the entire lake.
Model of the Blue Planet
The model of the world in the Tree of Knowledge.
The Tree of Knowledge once contained a geocentric model of the Blue Planet. The Ohara model showed the Blue Planet to have six natural satellites, which presumably includes the world's moon, one of which had a second body orbiting it. The Blue Planet as shown in the model sits at a rough angle of about 24 to 25 degrees.[3]
Trivia
The planting of the Tree of Knowledge is currently the only known event which predates both of the Blue Planet's known calendars.
The Tree of Knowledge's name is a possible reference to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from the Bible, which is the tree that Adam and Eve ate from.
The Tree of Knowledge may have been inspired by Methuselah, which is around 4800 years old, making it one of oldest known living individual trees.[4]
An older tree, unofficially known as "Old Hara", was reportedly discovered by Tom Harlan circa 2013, based on a tree core kept by Edmund Schulman in the 1950s.[5] However, the age of Old Hara was deemed uncertain in 2017 when, some time after Harlan's passing, the core could not be found at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research.[4]
The Tree of Knowledge's fate was similar to the Library of Alexandria, one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world, as it was also burned down.
