Personality

In life, John was such an incredibly greedy and loathsome person that his own crew declared mutiny and killed him due to his ways.[4] Notably, he was a heavy drinker. Like the rest of his male crewmates, he was lovestruck the moment he first saw Shakky. When she was included in the conversation with Rocks, John attributes that she would go with the one who had the most treasures when she was included. This is accentuated when he uses his powers of magnetism to attract all the treasures in God Valley.[5][6]

As a zombie, John was slow moving and still a drunkard,[7] and the alcohol he drinks leaks out of his perforated belly.

Relationships

Rocks Pirates

Like the other Rocks Pirates, John was not loyal to his captain or crewmates[2] and was willing to abandoned them and steal all of the treasure for himself.[8]

Other

Shakuyaku

Similarly to his male crewmates, John became infatuated with Shakuyaku from the moment he first laid eyes on her.[6] This affection went to the point where he was ready and willing to fight for her safety, in the form of the God Valley Incident.[9]

Abilities and Powers

During life, John was a member of the very powerful Rocks Pirates, and eventually made a name for himself after he left and formed his own crew.[2] However, he was not an effective leader, as he was killed by his own crew when they mutinied on him.[4]

As a zombie, he was nearly invincible, his only weakness being salt. With his corpse being used by Hogback to create a General Zombie, he probably was a very powerful and feared pirate.[1]

Physical Abilities

John demonstrated remarkable physical strength, carrying a huge bag of treasure, which was several times larger than himself, with one hand, without experiencing any problems or fatigue.[10] He was able to recover fairly quickly from the powerful explosion caused by Ganzui, without receiving critical damage.[11]

In life, John wielded the Jiki Jiki no Mi. It gave him the ability to manipulate magnetic fields that could either attract or repel metallic objects to and from his body as he pleased.[8] He made usage of it in creating a metal gauntlet and when attempting to steal various treasures on God Valley.[10]

Weapons

John wielded two swords, which hung from his belt both in life and as a zombie. One sword had a blue hilt, and the other a green one, more like the hilt of a cutlass. Interestingly, John didn't carry them in the God Valley.

History

Biography

Time in the Rocks Pirates

About 44 years ago, John joined the violent pirate crew known as the Rocks Pirates. At a meeting with his captain, Rocks D. Xebec, John listened as Rocks informed he and his crewmates about his plan to acquire two particular Devil Fruits. One of said fruits was on Elbaph, and would require its King, Harald, to fully utilize its ability. John chimed in, assuming that his captain planned to take control of the legendary Galleila afterward. Due to requiring Harald in order to control said group, Kaidou suggested that they force Harald into joining them, earning him a beating from Rocks for his disrespect. After he, Shiki and Ganzui broke up the fight, John commented that the crew would obviously not remain together for long, so it would be best for them to work together for the time being, so as to maximize their gains. Afterward, Rocks rallied the whole crew, declaring that if they were to continue following him, he would take them to the ends of the world, and conquer the World Government.[12]

And so, they set out to do so. Sometime in the next two years, the Rocks Pirates invaded and robbed Foot Colony, a temple of the International Philanthropy Federation. Before they make their escape, the temple's defenses activated, trapping them inside. Fortunately, due to other circumstances, Newgate used Shima Yurashi, causing the entire island to nearly sink as the building collapsed, but also freeing the crew. While his crewmates bickered, John took notice of a Marine fleet approaching, warning his captain of such. The Rocks Pirates were forced to fight their way out, wiping out the Marines.

42 years ago, Shakuyaku stepped down as captain of the Kuja Pirates, before moving to Hachinosu to evade the Marines. When Rocks and the rest of his crew caught word of it, they moved to confront her, but were instead too enamored by her beauty to act. John was among those who doted on her, fulfilling her every request without question.[6] 39 years ago, Shakky was kidnapped from Hachinosu by an unknown perpetrator, who also killed Marlon in the process. The news of said kidnapping caused great grief and anger on Hachinosu, and in various parts of the pirate world.[13]

God Valley Incident

38 years ago, Shakky's whereabouts were then leaked to Hachinosu by an unknown informant. As it turned out, she was being held prize for the World Nobles' Native Hunting Competition on God Valley. John was among those in his crew who wished to rescue her, and so they set out to do so. Although they suffered a brief setback at sea due to King Harald, they eventually managed to continue toward God Valley.[14]

Just before they got to God Valley, Rocks made it clear that they would be fighting together to save Shakky, and that any treasure they found could be divided up later. Arguments quickly sprouted over who would be the one to get Shakky, as she could not be divided like the treasure. While his other crewmates assumed that simply saving her would result in gaining her affection, John stated his belief that the one to acquire the most treasure would surely win it instead.[15] After disembarking, John, still supporting his beliefs, claimed that he would be the one to gain the most treasure.[16] During the invasion, John managed to secure a large amount of treasure, and eventually competed with his crewmates over who would make it to Shakky first.[10]

Shakky was eventually rescued by Silvers Rayleigh, putting an end to the competition. However, plenty of treasure still remained, and that became the new primary objective. After preparing the transportation, John bid farewell to the rest of the Rocks Pirates, before using his devil fruit power to magnetically attract all of the treasure on the island. His actions did not go unnoticed by his crewmates, and he was subsequently attacked by Ganzui, who incapacitated him using an explosive attack.[8] John was able to recover afterward, cursing Ganzui for thwarting him.[11]

Eventually, the crew found itself faced against Monkey D. Garp and Gol D. Roger together. This lead to the death of his captain, Rocks, forcing the crew's dissolution following the God Valley Incident.[2]

Rise to Captain and eventual Death

At some point John later became a pirate captain himself and managed to build a large amount of treasure. But when he decided to keep the treasure for himself rather than share it with his crew, they mutinied and stabbed him several times in the chest, resulting in his death. However, his treasure was never found and became the subject of one of the great myths. Among those who decided to look for his lost treasure was Buggy.[4]

Postmortem

After his death, John's corpse eventually came into the possession of Dr. Hogback. With Hogback's surgical skills and Moria's Devil Fruit powers, the corpse of John was modified into a zombie with a shadow of a drunkard animating him. As he was modified, a glass armband of his was added to Moria's riches.

Monkey D. Luffy found John's armband amidst Moria's riches and took it not knowing that it was in reality a map to John's loot.[17] Buggy recognized the fabled T-mark during their time together in Impel Down. After some slight assistance from the clown pirate in exchange for the armband, the fabled map was given to the eager pirate.[18] However, it is unknown whether Buggy actually went to claim the treasure.

Thriller Bark Saga

Thriller Bark Arc

Later on, he was sent with the other General Zombies to capture the Straw Hat Pirates, but they eluded them.[19] Afterwards, he, along with all the others, attended Absalom's "wedding". Soon after, Oars changed the course of the ship and the General Zombies were sent to deal with him and were crushed. Later, as he laid crushed alongside the other General Zombies, the shadow animating him was recalled by Moria and implanted into himself along with the other shadows he stole.[20]
