Seto was one of the Shandia who lived on Jaya four hundred years ago.[1] He was the husband of Kalgara's daughter Mousse, making him an ancestor to Wyper.[3]
Appearance
Younger Seto.
Seto was a thin, muscular boy with shaggy black hair and tan skin. He wore a brown skirt made out of leaves, and a tan loincloth. He wore a white cap, with black upside down U shapes. He has white wings on his back, like other Shandia.
When he was older, he wore his hair in a ponytail, and he no longer wore his cap. He also had yellow bands around his upper arms.
Personality
Seto was a courageous and principled young man who aspired to become the next great warrior of the Shandia and uphold their ideals. He was so dedicated to this goal that when he caught the deadly Tree Fever, he became emotional and despondent out of grief that he would not be able to attain this dream.[1] Although he was devoted to his tribe, Seto demonstrated himself to be considerably more open-minded compared to most of his tribemates, as he was openly curious about the concept of "progress" after hearing about it from Mont Blanc Noland.[4] Seto demonstrated an opposition to rash decisionmaking, and was brave enough to prevent an effort by his tribemates to execute Noland's crew before the agreed-upon deadline, reasoning that it lacked the honor that the Shandia traditionally held.[5] In everyday life, Seto showed himself to be kind to animals, as he regularly fed Nola in addition to naming the snake.[3]
Relationships
Kalgara
Seto greatly admired Kalgara, who was widely regarded as the greatest Shandia warrior of their time, and openly admitted that he desired to become just like him someday.[1] The older warrior respected Seto well in turn, and Seto ultimately became part of his family after marrying Mousse. Following Noland's time on the island, the two frequently spent time together as Kalgara always accompanied Seto to ring the Golden Bell.[3]
Mont Blanc Noland
Seto was the first member of the Shandia to encounter Noland and his crew, and initially viewed them as invaders.[1] However, after being cured of the Tree Fever and following the eruption of wider conflict between Noland and the Shandia, Seto was more mindful of the crew and their mission compared to the rest of the tribe. He went as far as to protect them from being prematurely executed, though did not oppose their sacrifice once Noland looked to have failed to produce his cure in the time he promised.[5] Like the rest of the Shandia, Seto got along very well with the explorers once they delivered the cure, but then became gravely offended and standoffish after Noland cut down the Ancestor Trees, with Seto openly implying that they should leave.[6] However, after learning why the trees were cut down Seto was remorseful at the misunderstanding and wept while partaking in the effort to ring the Golden Bell as a symbol of renewed friendship.[7] Seto respected Noland for the rest of his life, greatly hoping that the explorer would return one day and naming his snake companion "Nola" in his honor.[3]
Nola
Seto took a great liking to Nola, the grandchild of the snake deity Kashigami, being the one to name it. Nola hung around the Golden Bell because it liked to hear the ringing, and when Seto came to ring it he was shown feeding Nola apples.[3] Seto became separated from the snake after Shandora was displaced to the sky, but Nola never forgot him even after 400 years, as the centuries-old snake was shown having a nightmare about Seto and Kalgara abandoning it.[8]
Abilities and Powers
As someone who aspired to become a Shandia warrior, Seto likely had some degree of fighting skill, though has not been shown in battle.
Weapons
Like most of his tribe, Seto wielded a spear.[3]
History
419 years before the present day, the Shandia were plagued by an outbreak of Tree Fever. Seto sat by the Pantri Chiya as he lay dying, and in his final breaths Chiya declared that the Shandia must sacrifice the maiden Mousse to the god Kashigami to save themselves from extinction. Right after Chiya's death, another warrior spotted a mark on Seto's arm that indicated he too had caught the disease. Seto panicked and raced outside before futilely trying to cut the mark from his arm. He broke down in tears as the warrior Kalgara approached him, being despondent that he would not have the chance to grow up into a great warrior himself. Later, Seto collapsed on the ground near the shore and was found by a foreign expedition party led by Mont Blanc Noland. Seto attempted to run, but lost consciousness again and was taken by the foreigners, who cured him of the Tree Fever. When the group discovered only sick people remaining in the village as the remaining tribe had gone to the sacrificial altar, Noland asked Seto what was going on, and Seto reluctantly told him about the planned sacrifice.[1]
Noland's interference in the sacrifice resulted in his party being captured by the Shandia, though Noland was allowed to go and obtain the cure that he had promised to bring to the people. Seto sat on a barrel outside the home of Chief Coburn as he dealt with Kalgara and other agitated warriors, and when Kalgara stepped out Seto asked him what "progress" was.[4] The next morning, an earthquake struck Jaya which was widely interpreted as a sign of the gods' wrath. The majority of the Shandia warriors lost their patience with Noland's crew and moved to execute them prematurely, but Seto put himself in between his tribemates and the crew, saying that he knew the Shandia warriors had more pride than this. As night fell and the deadline for Noland to procure a remedy passed, Seto could only watch as the crew was taken to be sacrificed. However, Noland was able to fulfill his promise just in time, and Seto watched as his tribemates were cured and life and laughter returned to the village.[5]
Over the next month, Noland and his crew developed a close friendship with the Shandia. However, this relationship soured quickly when the crew cut down swathes of sacred Ancestor Trees, causing the Shandia to treat them coldly. When a confused Noland approached Seto, he bluntly asked when the crew would head home.[6] However, the Shandia then learned right as Noland's crew was setting sail that they had done this to eliminate the Tree Fever and save the island, and a rueful Seto helped ring the Golden Bell as a symbol of the Shandia's forgiveness and apology to the group.[7]
Sometime within the following four years, Seto married Mousse and eventually fathered at least one child with her. He and Kalgara regularly ventured to the city of Shandora to ring the Bell, which Kalgara had promised to do until Noland returned. Each time they visited the Bell, Seto wondered aloud about when Noland would return. They would also meet Kashigami's grandchild there, which Seto named "Nola" in honor of Noland. Four years after Noland's departure, however, the portion of Jaya containing Shandora and the Shandia village would be blasted into the sky by a Knock Up Stream and settle atop the Sea Clouds. The Shandia had no time to recover from this shocking event before the native Skypieans invaded this land, causing war to break out. For the remainder of Seto's life and far beyond, this war raged while the Golden Bell was lost to the Shandia.[3]
