The Cover or Title pages (more commonly called Door (扉, Tobira?) pages in Japan) of each manga chapter list that chapter's title and number, together with a full-page illustration. These illustrations may come in several different formats; most notable are the so-called Cover Arcs, which are considered fully canon with the manga's storyline.
So far, only three chapters have lacked specific cover pages: Chapter 4, Chapter 6 and Chapter 1024.
Types of Cover Pages[]
Color Spread[]

The Color Spreads (見開きカラー, Mihiraki karā?) are the most elaborate type of cover, each being a full-color, double-page illustration. They may depict any number of subjects, though most feature group shots of the Straw Hat Pirates in some exotic environment or theme, and are usually irrelevant to the contemporary storyline.
Color Spreads are published whenever a given Weekly Shonen Jump issue chooses to run One Piece as a Lead Color (巻頭カラー, Kantōkarā?) feature. This may occur anywhere from five to twelve times a year, giving them an irregular frequency that often "interrupts" the more standard cover types (see below); on rare occasions, Color Spreads may even be published for consecutive chapters.
On the Color Spreads, the One Piece logo is generally modified so as to follow the theme of the cover. Many Color Spreads have been animated in some fashion, especially in openings for the Toei anime.
There are several differences between the Weekly Shonen Jump release and the collected volume's (tankōbon) release:
- The initial Jump releases print them in full color, and add various editorial tag-lines and advertisements; the chapter title and number were usually included prior to Chapter 691, but from then on became relegated to the chapter's first "story" page.
- The Complete Collection "Logs" reprint them almost identically, but with updated typesetting and advertisements.
- The tankōbon releases (and Shueisha Jump Remixes) reprint them in grayscale, and always place the chapter title (and number) on an outer border.
- The Color Walks reprint them in color on higher-quality paper, and remove all extraneous text.
Chapter 999-1000 Full Color spread
While Jump prints most Color Spreads conventionally, i.e. on adjacent pages, some are formatted as fold-outs, allowing the illustrations to stand clear of the "gutter" between pages. On rare occasions, still more unconventional printings occur:
- A few, such as Chapter 507's, are "vertical" illustrations meant to be viewed width-wise.
- Chapter 999's and Chapter 1000's depict two halves of a single illustration, meant to be joined.
- Chapter 12's and Chapter 691's are fold-outs running three and four pages, respectively (the former is turned vertically and resized to one page in all tankōbon releases; the latter is "wrapped" around two consecutive leaves, with the first and last sections on opposite sides and the middle staying intact as a spread).
- Chapter 304's, uniquely, is part of a "Mugiwara Theatre" omake giving it a quasi-plot.
- Chapter 863's, which features hundreds of minute head-shots, is replaced with a new (and significantly simpler) spread in all tankōbon releases.
From Chapter 0's on, Color Spreads have occasionally been used to promote tie-ins, such as upcoming films, video games, and cross-brand collaborations.
Color Covers[]

A variant on Color Spreads, Color Covers feature single-page color illustrations, published whenever a given Weekly Shonen Jump issue chooses to run One Piece as a Center Color (センターカラー, Sentākarā?) feature. These were the most common color feature during the East Blue Saga, but decreased sharply afterwards, and stopped entirely after the Arabasta Saga.
Animal Theater[]

Animal Theater (アニマル劇場, Animaru Gekijō?)[1] covers are single-page illustrations exclusive to pre-timeskip chapters. Each depicts one or more Straw Hats in some activity with various (often anthropomorphic) animals, ranging from adventure and athletics to household chores. Oda has confirmed that he likes drawing animals, sometimes with unique coloring or appearance.[2]
At first, Animal Theater covers followed no specific pattern, even interrupting cover stories on some occasions like color spreads. However, from Chapter 120 on, they entered distinct "runs" used strictly to bridge cover stories, and rotating between the Straw Hats (including Nefertari Vivi and Karoo) one at a time. The final run, beginning from Chapter 580, shifted focus to characters outside the Straw Hats.
Short-Term Focused Title-Page Serials[]

Short-Term Focused Cover Page Serials (短期集中表紙連載, Tanki Shūchū Hyōshi Rensai?, "Cover Stories" for short) use cover pages to tell side-stories of various secondary characters, parallel to the manga's primary storyline. Each cover serves as a one-page installment or 'volume' of its corresponding story, which usually comprise several dozen installments.
While most cover stories follow a single protagonist and plot, a few split their focus between several:
- Straw Hat's Separation Serial: Unlike the rest of Cover Stories, this focuses on the main characters' own adventure after the events on Sabaody Archipelago, and happens parallel to Luffy's adventures from Amazon Lily Arc to the Marineford Arc.
- From the Decks of the World and From the Decks of the World: The 500,000,000 Man Arc: Those stories depicts the Straw Hats friends and families as they read the news of the Straw Hats' renewed adventures, from their return after two years of absence, to their new bounties.
- The Stories of the Self-Proclaimed Straw Hat Grand Fleet: After going their separate ways from Dressrosa, the division commanders of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet each enter their own adventure. This is the first Cover Story to actually be divided into arcs.
Where They Are Now[]

A short-lived variant on cover arcs, Where They Are Now (あの人は今, Ano Hito wa Ima?) depicts standalone "shots" of how various civilians continue their lives after meeting the Straw Hats. After the timeskip, it was supplanted by the "From the Decks of the World" series, which are counted as cover arcs proper.
Fan Requests[]

After the timeskip, Fan Requests were opened for cover pages outside the color spreads and cover stories. These are effectively a continuation of Animal Theater, though with regular allowance for characters outside the Straw Hats.

Misc.[]
A few covers do not neatly follow any of the above categories. These would be regular covers (black and white single page, with the chapter's title and series name in the magazine release), but can be featured in the middle of Cover Stories. So far, there are seven such covers, those are the covers of chapters 29, 30, 31, 82, 432, 766 (with differently styled series title), and 839.
Additionally, chapters 4, 6 and 1024 do not have a specific cover, and the chapter begins with the first page.

- Cover pages—particularly color spreads—almost always depict the Straw Hat Pirates as a complete set, even during periods in the main storyline where one or more members have become estranged.
- Conversely, they did not include Jinbe with the crew until Chapter 967, more than fifty chapters after Luffy officially accepted him.
- During the manga's first three years of publication, color spreads and color covers were usually joined by at least one full-color "story" page. This practice stopped after Chapter 144 (notwithstanding a one-time revival in Chapter 598 and a few omakes such as Orchestra of the Sea).
- At least five cover pages have been used by Oda to pay tribute to other mangaka:
- Chapter 233 (death of Eiji Kumazawa—pen name Gin Shinga—a fellow assistant under Nobuhiro Watsuki)
- Chapter 766 (ending of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto)
