Royal Guards are warriors in personal service to a royal family. Every country has a unique set of guards with their own structure, many times overlapping in some capacity with the nation's military.

Royal Guard Organizations

Drum and Sakura Kingdoms

During King Wapol's reign, the Drum Kingdom's royal guards were led by the captain of security (守備隊隊長, shubi-tai taichō?) Dalton.[2] Seven years ago, after Dr. Hiriluk's death, Dalton quit, and was imprisoned;[3] it is unknown who led the royal guards after him. When Wapol fled the kingdom during Blackbeard's attack, the royal guards joined him in turning pirate, and eventually followed him back in his attempt to reclaim the kingdom.[4]

After Wapol was deposed, Dalton was crowned king, and the royal guards seemingly shifted allegiance to the newly formed Sakura Kingdom. Membership was expanded, and Lapahns joined. They are now known as the Peace Corps (平和部隊, Heiwa Butai?).[5]

They dress in warm suits consisting of green coats, snow goggles, ear-flap snow caps, brown gloves and black boots. Their helmets were later modified to resemble Chopper's reindeer antlers.[6]

Arabasta Kingdom

The Arabasta Kingdom's military is the Arabasta Kingdom Guard Squad (アラバスタ王国護衛隊, Arabasuta Ōkoku Goei-tai?),[7][8] colloquially referred to as the Royal Army (国王軍, Kokuō-gun?).[9] It is led by Igaram, its captain,[7] with Pell and Chaka acting as commanders under him. Chaka took the role of acting captain during Igaram's infiltration of Baroque Works.[8] In addition to their three leaders, the royal guards included the Tsumegeri Guards, four elite soldiers, prior to their deaths from drinking the Hero Water.[10] Before the civil war, the army numbered 600,000, though half of them defected and joined the rebels.[9]

The royal guards acted as the primary military force supporting the kingdom during the civil war during Operation Utopia, and were, like the Rebel Army, infiltrated by Baroque Works agents who instigated conflict and smuggled Dance Powder into the kingdom.[11] One of these infiltrated soldiers acted as the catalyst of the civil war's final battle, "accidentally" shooting a cannon at the approaching rebels.[12]

They are dressed in tunics, brown metal dragon-pattern armor, sandals, and metal helmets. Lower-ranked soldiers frequently wield long polearms.

Super Spot-Billed Duck Troops

The Super Spot-Billed Duck Troops are a subdivision of the Royal Army led by Karoo, composed of Super Spot-Billed Ducks (and later a Yasa Camel). They are the fastest land animals in the kingdom, and operate directly under the royal family.

The following events are non-canon, and therefore not considered part of the canon story.

New Royal Army

In the Memoria corrupted by the Large Mukashic Cube, Crocodile's Operation Utopia succeeded, and he took over the Arabasta Kingdom. As king, he reformed the Royal Army into the New Royal Army (新・国王軍, Shin Kokuō-gun?), merging them with Baroque Works. Baroque Works' Officer Agents were made generals and put in charge of the capital and other important cities, and other bounty heads in Arabasta were recruited into the force.[13]

They wear a similar uniform to the original Royal Army, but with dark colors; black tunic capes and armor and yellow feather rows instead of red.

Concludes non-canon section.

Mary Geoise

Mary Geoise's royal guards accompany and guard the World Nobles,[14] and seemingly handle general security tasks around the capital.[1] Sabo infiltrated the Levely by posing as one of these royal guards.[15]

Knights of God

Main article: Knights of God

The Knights of God are a group of World Nobles who act as an elevated police force, with the exclusive right to punish other World Nobles for misconduct. Acting as Nerona Imu's personal military force, they are significantly stronger than average soldiers, and possess Covenants with Imu directly.[16] They are sometimes deployed to fulfill Imu's orders outside of the capital, such as to coerce unaffiliated countries into joining the World Government or to punish those who defy him.[17]

The Knights of God are led by a Supreme Commander, with a Commander operating below them; these roles were last held by Figarland Garling[18] and Shamrock[19] respectively, though the status of the Supreme Commander position after Garling's promotion to the Five Elders is unclear. Full membership can only be held by 13 individuals at any time, including the two Commander roles.[16]

The organization also includes lower-ranked, squire-like subordinates, known as the Devoted Blades of God. There are currently no known Devoted Blades of God, though it can sometimes act as a gateway to full membership, with Manmayer Gunko[20] and Harald[16] both holding the title before their promotions.

Lvneel Kingdom

Not much is known about the Lvneel Kingdom's royal guards, though 200 of them accompanied King Aruyutayan V on his journey to Jaya despite having no sailing experience.[21]

Four hundred years ago, they dressed in a mesh-mail that covered their arms, with a purple double-breasted bolted sleeveless shirt over it, two brown belts at the waist, purple gloves, and blue pants. It is unknown if this remains their uniform in the present day.

Esperia Kingdom

The Esperia Kingdom's royal military was called the Battle Convoy (護衛戦団, Goei Sendan?), and included specialized squads, such as the Raider Squad (奇襲部隊, Kishū Butai?). It was previously led by Candelle before her ascension to queen, and later by Brook.[22] Brook also formerly acted as captain of the Raider Squad, before his promotion.[23]

Ryugu Kingdom

The Ryugu Kingdom's Neptune Army (ネプチューン軍, Nepuchūn-gun?) employs a force composed of fish-men and mermen led by the Neptune Brothers while led by Neptune himself during Roger's time. During Princess Shirahoshi's protective imprisonment, members of this army were tasked with bringing her food and guarding her tower,[24] in addition to their general jobs protecting Ryugu Palace.[25]

Jinbe[26] and Aladine[27] were both members in the past, as was Hody Jones when he assassinated Queen Otohime.[28]

They dress in hardened shells, and wield tridents.

Ammo Knights

As opposed to the more defensive royal guards, the Ammo Knights act as the Ryugu Kingdom's offensive force. They accompany the princes on official duties.[29]

Dressrosa

During King Riku's initial rule, Dressrosa's royal guards consisted of the Riku Royal Army (リク王軍, Riku Ō Gun?), led by Military Captain (軍隊長, gun taichō?) Kyros.[30] When Doflamingo dethroned King Riku, he used his Parasite to force the members of the Riku Royal Army to attack their countrymen; during the subsequent conflict with the Donquixote Pirates, many of the soldiers were killed.

Following his crowning as king, Doflamingo officially pardoned a number of the army's members, under the premise that they were simply following King Riku's orders. Those who refused to submit to him were turned into toys, while the pardoned soldiers were transformed into the Dressrosa Self-Defense Force (ドレスローザ自衛軍, Doresurōza Jiei-gun?), under the command of soldier-turned-commander Tank Lepanto.[31][32] Kyros, transformed into the "Toy Soldier", later founded a successor Riku Royal Army, made up of Tontatta dedicated to taking Doflamingo down.

After Doflamingo was deposed and King Riku returned to the throne, it is unknown what form the royal military of Dressrosa took, though Tank appears to have remained in command.

Tonta Corps

Main article: Tontatta Pirates

The Tonta Corps are a secondary royal force under King Riku's command during his second tenure as king. An evolution of Kyros's second Riku Royal Army after the success of Operation SOP, they act as personal bodyguards of the royal family, as well as a pirate force in the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. They are composed of 200 dwarves operating under Leo.

Mokomo Dukedom

During the rules of Dukes Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, the Mokomo Dukedom had three royal guard corps. They were divided by time of day, matching the ruling time of each duke: the Musketeer Squad operated under Inuarashi during the day, while the Guardians operated under Nekomamushi at night.[33] The third force, the Kingsbirds, were special aides the operated under both rulers, acting similar to liaisons between the other two forces.[34]

After Carrot's ascension to Duke, the structure of the three organizations is unknown.

Aoi Kingdom

Little is known of the Aoi Kingdom's royal guards, though it was at one point commanded by Issho, who held the position of "Captain of the Security Force" (警備軍隊長, Keibi Gun Taichō?, VIZ: "Captain of the military police").[35]

Other Royal Guards

T Bone previously acted as a royal knight in an unknown Grand Line kingdom. Nothing else is known about his time there.[36][37]

The Warland Kingdom possesses some kind of royal military, who defended Aurust Castle and the royal army,[38] though many of them were killed during Harald's Covenant-induced rampage.[39] After the castle was abandoned, only two guards remained at its entrance.[40]
