The subject of this article is also called Elbaf.

Elbaph[3] is a nation in the New World that is inhabited by giants, and is unaffiliated with the World Government.[4] Officially, Elbaph Island (エルバフ島, Erubafu-tō?) contains the Warland Kingdom (ウォーランド王国, Wōrando Ōkoku?, English versions: "War-Land Kingdom"), but the nation is commonly referred to by the general term "Elbaph".[5]

Elbaph has always been a fiercely independent nation renowned for its warmongering culture; it is considered to be the strongest country in the world due to its mighty warriors.[6][7] During the past century, King Harald sought to shift Elbaph's culture to prioritize scholarship and diplomacy, and pursued affiliation with the World Government. However, the government solely valued Elbaph for its fighting power, creating conflicts that resulted in Harald's death. In the present day, the World Government is actively attempting to annex Elbaph by force. Nerona Imu has equated Elbaph's defiance with the Will of D.[8]

It was first mentioned during the Little Garden Arc and was a desired destination of both Luffy and Usopp.[9][10] It was shown for the first time in a flashback during the Whole Cake Island Arc.[1]

It is the primary setting of the Elbaph Arc.

Geography

Plants, trees, vines, flowers, insects, fish, birds, and animals... everything is breathtakingly huge.
— Louis Arnote's notes on Elbaph.[11]

Elbaph as a whole is located east of Wano Country[12][13] and northeast of Egghead.[14] According to Road, within the sea route between Elbaph and Egghead, there is a stretch of sea that generates a strange mist with sleep-inducing properties.

Appropriately enough, both the fauna and flora of Elbaph are overall comparatively huge to those found in most other islands. Pine trees are a common form of vegetation but still enormous compared to regular ones. The same applies to flowers, fish, birds, and even insects, all of which tend to resemble already existing species, except at a greater scale of size. The animals of Elbaph generally consist of those used to temperate forests and other colder environments, like wolves, bears, walruses, owls, and so on, save a few more exceptional species. Snowfall happens in all regions, especially during winter, with a particularly long and destructive cold spell having happened at least once in the country's history.

There is seemingly an anomalous effect on those living in Elbaph. The great explorer Louis Arnote cautioned visitors from spending too long on the island.[15] Long-term resident Scopper Gaban felt that only three or four years had passed since he had last seen former crewmate Shanks, even though at least ten years had passed since their crew had disbanded.[16]

Underworld

Luffy taming beasts in the Underworld.

The Underworld (冥界, Meikai?), also known as the First World (第一世界, Daiichi Sekai?) in local legends, refers to the lower regions of Elbaph, below the Adam Tree's branches and surrounding its base. It consists primarily of snow-coated, forested mountains surrounding the Adam Tree's base, with grassy plains near the coast. Because sunlight is blocked by the Adam Tree's canopy, the climate is always very cold with raging blizzards.

The freezing temperatures, coupled with the multitude of giant, wild beasts that inhabit the mountain range, make the whole territory very desolate and unsuitable for civilization. The same applies to the waters around the island, which feature similarly gigantic fauna and heavy, dense fog.[17] As such, very few settlements appear to exist in these lands besides a mountaintop castle where Road lives and a tavern closer to the seaside, where sunlight is more prominent. Giants may come down to this region for hunting purposes, however, as the resident animals can provide them with ample nourishment. According to Jarul, humans rarely venture beyond the Underworld, so most leave mistakenly believing that it is the extent of Elbaph.[18]

According to Loki, this area is so hostile that criminals are often punished by just being sent here, with Loki further describing it as both a prison and an execution ground filled with the bones of giants and humans that have been long buried by the constant snow. Aside from the gigantic fauna that dominates the territory, a few humans who have managed to avoid death for opposing Elbaph are known to barely survive in this region as scavengers, covering themselves in smelly rags in order to avoid being eaten. Both the humans and the beasts are aligned with Loki, who himself was sentenced to imprisonment with seastone chains at the Tree Adam's base.

Treasure Tree Adam

Main article: Treasure Tree Adam

The Treasure Tree Adam forms the upper regions of Elbaph and thus is considered the backbone of the Warland Kingdom, as its sheer size allows even the already enormous giants to live in settlements above its branches. Its existence also affects the climate of the lower regions, which are deprived of sunlight due to the tree providing them with eternal shade.

According to Ripley, Adam's wood is strong, but it is not impervious to getting old and decrepit. Because of this, some of Elbaph's ancient branches are particularly vulnerable to fire and lightning. To counter this, Elbaph has a dedicated team of firefighters to combat wildfires, with cutting off the burning branch being an alternative if necessary.[19]

Notably, an ancient mural depicting what appears to be past events can be found somewhere on Adam's bark. According to Ripley, it was carved by children who lived through the Void Century and has significant historical value for that reason.

Sun World

Main article: Sun World

The Sun World is the main upper region of Elbaph and where its population primarily lives. Most of the land consists of deciduous forests and plains, as well as urban settlements built by the resident giants. These settlements are built on individual branches of the Adam Tree but have more recently been connected through specially built Branch Routes.[20] A special flying ship known as a Svarr can be used for quick traversal around this region.

Interestingly, the climate of the Sun World allows the existence of both Island Clouds and Sea Clouds, which coexist with Adam's branches to form solid ground and landmarks, providing the region with extra land and bodies of water.[21]

Heaven World

The Heaven World (天界, Tenkai?, VIZ: "Astral World") is the topmost region of Elbaph and in the highest branches of Treasure Tree Adam.[22] Virtually nothing is known about this region currently.

Ida's Bar (イーダの酒場, Īda no Sakaba?) is a tavern located at the coast that is sometimes frequented by Elbaph's inhabitants or outsider guests, particularly pirates. It was founded by Ida and is currently run by Mato, another giantess.[23]

The Red Hair Pirates and the Giant Warrior Pirates are known customers of this place, with both once meeting up there while Shanks ran some errands in the island.[24]

The giant Road is known to live in a castle located atop one of the Underworld's snowy mountains. This castle connects itself to the the upper lands through a rope bridge. According to Road, this building was once used as a detention facility for giants; it was used to imprison Loki after he burned down the Brewers Village.

The Land of Gods is a giant diorama made of building blocks crafted by Road, which he rules as a fantasy kingdom through a persona known as the "Sun God".

Government

The royal emblem of Elbaph.

The royal emblem of Elbaph.

As a kingdom, Elbaph is governed by a monarchy. Elbaph's royal emblem features a helmet above two crossed axes and three vertical lines behind the axe handles. It is used in places such as the sails of the royal ship, on the belt buckle of the king, on the breast collar of the royal steed Asla, and on Elbaph products gifted to other nations.[27] Elbaph's final king was Harald, who instituted many reforms, turning Elbaph into a trading, peacetime nation rather than a warring one, which have been effective in changing the mindset of the younger generation.[28] Since his death, the throne has been left vacant.

Because of Elbaph's own prejudices against giants from other lands, Harald's original foreigner spouse, Ida, who had conceived Hajrudin with him, was unable to become queen, leaving Hajrudin effectively with the status of a commoner without a claim to the throne.[29] The kingdom's crown prince, Loki, was born after Hajrudin, with his birth having been heavily celebrated during the Winter Solstice Festival. Loki had the privilege of proposing to one of the daughters of Charlotte Linlin, a hated person by all the world's giants, and as a result, agreed to make the kingdom's army her allies.[6]

The royal family of Elbaph carries the duty of passing down a specific Devil Fruit, the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Nidhöggr, to the next generation. King Harald ordered his son, Prince Loki, to obtain this special Devil Fruit so the latter could kill him and save Elbaph. However, the prince would have the truth of this incident kept hidden and took the blame for killing his father to obtain the Devil Fruit fourteen years ago.[30][31] The giants considered this a despicable enough act that Loki ended up branded as Elbaph's greatest shame as a result, and thus he was not allowed to ascend to the throne[28] until his name was later cleared by Jarul.

Aside from the royal family, Elbaph also has village elders that act as a secondary authority in local matters, maintaining an important leadership role after Harald's passing. They had enough influence to go against Harald's reforms back when he was alive, although some elders like Jarul did not entirely oppose the idea of facilitating commerce between Elbaph and other countries. They outright forbade him from marrying Ida, a foreigner, maintaining that the royal bloodline must stay pure, and even chose a suitable wife for him. When the Knights of God launched an assault on Elbaph, Saint Sommers chose to make his demands to Jarul as the highest authority present. Since Jarul's words carry great weight, he was able to exonerate Loki from his criminal status by revealing the truth via a monologue alone.

Justice

It is known that Elbaph has criminal detention facilities located in the Underworld, but they appear to be no longer in use. Rather, it seems that just being exiled to the Underworld by itself is already enough of a punishment to most criminals, due to the extreme hostility of the area as a whole. Loki in particular was crucified and chained with seastone to the base of the Treasure Tree Adam, to prevent him from unleashing his strength. Condemned as a criminal, Loki was stripped of his status as the heir to the throne until Jarul exonerated him.

Values and Strength

Elbaph is famed as the most powerful nation in the world,[6] and its army is renowned for its strength. Long, long ago Elbaph conquered the New World.[32] When Carmel brought up the possibility that Elbaph might send their army to declare war against the world for the execution of their Giant Warrior Pirates members, the Marines released the captives in fear of such a possible event, a fear they did not show even in the advent of war against the entire Whitebeard Pirates 100 years later.[33] Linlin believed that had she been able to ally with the armies of Elbaph via marriage, she would have been able to overthrow the rest of the Four Emperors and claim the title of Pirate King.[34]

Dorry and Brogy present themselves as "proud warriors of Elbaph," which suggests the great importance they place on their honor, their strength, and their nation. As the life of giants is much longer than that of humans, they do not give much importance to material things, prioritizing other values like their honor and the pursuit of a glorious death.[35] For the warriors of Elbaph, honor is considered an eternal treasure.[35] They believe that to stain one's honor is to lose one's very self.[36] This strong sense of pride means a warrior of Elbaph must never bring disgrace to their nation's name.[37] Elbaph is also used as a term of pride (i.e., "I am the mightiest warrior from Elbaph!").

This code of honor is overseen by the god of Elbaph, who is also referred to as the God of Battle (戦いの神, Tatakai no Kami?).[36] If there is any sort of dispute between giants where neither side will yield, they battle to the death, with the belief that their god determines the victor by protecting the one who is right.[26] In Elbaph, the only way to end a duel is through death.[38] This belief is so ingrained that when Dorry was sabotaged before a battle, he still went proudly to fight, knowing he would lose, understanding only that the divine protection of the god of battle was not with him.[36] Similarly, Dorry initially wanted to fight against Brogy despite his injuries because he did not want to dishonor his country.[37]

Jorul's grave.

Jorul's grave.

According to Jarul, a warrior is not defined by how they live but by how they die.[39] Consequently, it is considered a mighty disgrace for a giant to die for any other reason but in battle, and to give a warrior a dishonorable death is an unforgivable crime. This happened with Jorul, the legendary elderly warrior who attempted to stop a rampaging Linlin decades ago. Jorul did not die in the event itself but rather was gravely wounded by Linlin, and because of his advanced age, he was unable to resist the following health complications that took away his life. That said, Jorul's memory is still respected by Elbaph's population, as he was allowed a grave for mourning purposes. Also, for being perceived as the cause of Jorul's undignified death, Linlin earned Elbaph's hatred in spite of having been just a child at the time.

Fiercely independent for centuries on account of their strength, Elbaph has long valued its isolationism. It has had a constant enmity with the World Government throughout the latter's eight-century existence, with Nerona Imu equating the nation with the Will of D. for unknown reasons.[40] However, this national pride has resulted in xenophobic sentiment against foreigners and non-giants pervading much of Elbaph's culture. Giants that are not involved in seafaring tend to be very ignorant of other cultures, as some are unaware, for example, of the existence of fish-men. Elbaph believes in eugenics, as having children with other giants from foreign countries is considered to be tainting the pure blood of Elbaph. This is the primary reason why Hajrudin was denied the position of royalty despite being the son of the king.[41]

King Harald favored trading with other countries over waging war and started a series of reforms intended to turn Elbaph into a more peaceful nation focused on trade rather than one revolving around war.[28] Twenty years ago, he requested Jaguar D. Saul to found a school for Elbaph children. Nowadays, the local children embody Harald’s vision for the country and dislike violence as a result, with the previous generation being seen as Elbaph’s last generation of warriors.[28] Despite Harald's ideals of pacifism being unpopular amongst the elders, he remained a well-respected figure within the kingdom, as no citizen condoned Loki committing patricide for the sake of a Devil Fruit, and they punished him as the greatest shame of Elbaph while denying him the throne.[28] Upon Jarul revealing the truth and that Loki was a tragic hero instead of a traitor, the hatred for him shifted to the ones truly responsible: the World Government.

In spite of its former isolationist culture, Elbaph is a pioneer in navigational techniques, which were spread around the world thanks to Harald. In exchange, thanks to Harald's diplomacy and further efforts to build ties with humans and other races, Elbaph gained valuable insight on how to develop beyond its warrior roots, learning new ways to produce food and construct buildings. Elbaph also places great value on the historical records of their ancestors, which are preserved in the Owl Library.

Despite the nation placing great emphasis on honor, it is not without corruption. Estrid, born of a noble family and noted by the elders to be worthy of being Elbaph's queen, proved herself to be a selfish, greedy, superstitious, and cruel woman who tried to abandon her husband and take off with all of his riches once she became traumatized by their son's physical appearance. Her relatives from Brewers Village were even worse, as they poisoned Harald's lover, Ida, in the belief that it would eliminate competition for the royal inheritance and tried to coax Loki into cooperating with them on such a devious plan.

Religion and Festivities

The Giants of Elbaph believe in the legend of the Sun God Nika, who supposedly fought with a body that stretched and contracted.[42] There is also a currently unnamed god of Elbaph, who is referred to as the God of Battle (戦いの神, Tatakai no Kami?), who oversees the code of honor held by Elbaph's warriors.[36]

The Harley.

The Harley.

A religious text known as the Harley is passed down in Elbaph. The text is ancient and can no longer be translated, so there are several interpretations of it. According to the Harley, the world has been destroyed twice in the past, and each time Nika was connected to the event.[43] Due to this, as well as the Giant's inability to translate the ancient texts, there are multiple interpretations of Nika's depiction, with some seeing him as a Savior, a liberator, and a God of Laughter; while others see him as a ruler, destroyer, and as a God of destruction. Regardless of the interpretations, many Giants see Nika not just as a symbol of faith, but also as one of power, with many Giants idolizing him to the point of wishing and dreaming of becoming the "Sun God" themselves. Some giants even view becoming the next "Sun God" as a personal goal, viewing such a title as the means to achieving their greatest desires, even if such desires include destroying the whole world in Loki's case.

Every year, the denizens hold a certain traditional festival known as the "Winter Solstice". As the name suggests, it is held during the end of the year to pay their gratitude to the sun. The citizens undergo fasting for 12 days, with only water to sustain them; prior to its start, they eat a huge quantity of semla to gain enough nutrition for the next 12 days. After the fasting period, a huge festival would be held to celebrate.[44]

63 years ago, during one particular Winter Solstice, Linlin's gluttonous desire for more semla caused her to lose control on the 7th day, decimating an entire village on Elbaph in search for the sweet,[45] and even killing the elder giant hero Jorul.[46] Prior to death, Jorul regarded Linlin as an Evil Spirit in the form of a child who is unworthy to pay thanks to the sun.[45]

History

Past

At least 3,000 years ago, a laboratory was built into Elbaph's Treasure Tree by unknown individuals.[47]

Long, long ago, in a time that far predates the era of Roger, Whitebeard, and the Four Emperors, the giants of Elbaph conquered the New World.[32]

113 years ago a young Harald was crowned Elbaph's King.[48] More than 100 years ago, a pirate crew of giants from Elbaph was formed, led first by Jorul and Jarul and later by Dorry and Brogy. They left Elbaph and caused enough turmoil in the world to have gained a bounty of Beli100 million each.[49] By at least 109 years ago, the Giant Warrior Pirates became feared throughout the world for their actions, with the majority of their fellow giants being feared as well by association. This fear was only further fostered by the actions of King Harald, who at the time was an unruly man and barely ruled over Elbaph, choosing instead to travel the seas and cause as much mayhem as possible. 105 years ago, Harald would finally return from his travels and inform all of Elbaph that he intended to learn more about the many different cultures of the world and to bring the knowledge of said cultures back with him. He was considering changing Elbaph's various traditions as well, mentioning that they might be perceived as threatening to outsiders, and wanted to change that.

100 years ago, some of the Giant Warrior Pirates were captured and sentenced to execution. After "Holy Mother" Carmel gave a scripted salvation of the giants from a public execution, she was welcomed into Elbaph for her generosity and desire to form a bridge between species.[33] However, she used the newly built Sheep's House to sell orphans to the World Government, knowing that Elbaph would give her greater access to "merchandise." She was directly responsible for giving the Marines John Giant, the first giant ever to be enlisted into the organization.[50]

81 years ago, Harald would return to Elbaph for Ida, as she would give birth to their son, Hajrudin, in the fisherman village. As happy as Harald was to marry Ida, he was refused the opportunity by the elders, who told them that she and her child could live on Elbaph, but that they would not allow him to wed a Giant not born from Elbaph and that they had already arranged for him to marry Estrid instead. Despite his feelings on the matter, Harald agreed to the marriage. 63 years ago, while Harald was away, Estrid gave birth to their son Loki. She was horrified by his appearance, to the point that she disowned him as her child and denied his existence, throwing him into the Underworld. Queen Estrid became bedridden not long afterwards and ordered a guard to dispose of Loki, citing a prophecy stating that Loki would one day end up killing Harald.

Also around this time, 5-year-old Charlotte Linlin was abandoned on Elbaph by her parents due to the child's uncontrollable destructive tendencies, causing her to be exiled from her own country. Her parents had hoped that Carmel would be able to give their daughter a better life.[17] Although Carmel accepted Linlin into the Sheep's House, several incidents arose from the child due to her superhuman strength. Nonetheless, the giants accepted Linlin as a citizen, where she felt at home due to her gigantic size for a human.[51]

Linlin destroys the Western Village.

Linlin destroys the Western Village.

10 months after Linlin's arrival, the giants of Elbaph prepared to celebrate the Winter Solstice Festival, in which a 12-day fast was to occur after feasting on semla.[44] On the seventh day of the fast, Linlin lost control from hunger and desired more semla, causing her to devastate the Western Village. Elder warrior Jorul labeled her as an evil spirit in the form of a child and tried to strike her down,[45] but was fatally injured by the girl. After Linlin was satisfied with the semla, Jarul attempted to kill her in revenge, only for Carmel to plead for mercy and promise to take the child away from Elbaph. Despite the giants' newfound hatred for Charlotte Linlin, they spared her life because of their respect for Carmel, and the Holy Mother took all the residents of Sheep's House to another island because the orphans refused to leave her. As a result of Linlin's violent actions and killing the hero Jorul, all the giants in the world, particularly the ones from Elbaph, came to hate her, especially when she innocently questioned about Jorul's death, as she had no memory of the rampage.[52] A giant from Elbaph later visited the island where the residents of the Sheep's House moved to. When checking on Carmel and the orphans, he witnessed Linlin committing a horrific act that made Carmel and the children disappear while they were celebrating her sixth birthday. The giant quickly fled the island and returned to Elbaph to relay the news. The giants of Elbaph grew more furious at Linlin to the point that they refused to say her name.[53]

Thanks to Harald's efforts, Elbaph is saved by its new allies.

Thanks to Harald's efforts, Elbaph is saved by its new allies.

That same year, a series of harsh weather events afflicted Elbaph, destroying much of the crops. As a result, a famine overtook the island as the winter began, with the queen constantly attributing these disasters to Loki's "Curse." As the famines became worse, brutal fighting between villages broke out, and many were killed simply trying to defend their food stock. Many began believing in the queen's words, growing more paranoid and violent as a result. Fortunately, King Harald arrived back on Elbaph with exceptional timing and saved the pair from the attacker. In addition to this, King Harald also managed to call on a few of Elbaph's new allied nations for aid, ending the famine. In order to prevent such a crisis from breaking out again, Harald set out to improve Elbaph's internal relations, establishing new trade routes between barriers.[54] Because of how busy this left Harald, Estrid's older brother was appointed as Loki's steward and tasked with raising the child.[55]

48 years ago, Harald constructed the eight branch routes of Elbaph, helping unify and allowing trade between the villages.[20] Around this time, Harald's policies became beloved by the people, and Loki's antics began, starting with the mysterious deaths of the royal steed and his uncle. However, Loki would encounter a band of pirates led by Rocks D. Xebec who were searching for Elbaph and Harald.

Vegapunk's clone visits Elbaph to read the books recovered from Ohara.

22 years ago, some months after the Ohara Incident, Jaguar D. Saul led a team of giants from Elbaph to retrieve what knowledge survived. After all the books were acquired, they were taken to the Owl Library for safekeeping. Roughly two years later, a clone of Vegapunk made a discreet visit to Elbaph and, with permission from the giants, was allowed to read and memorize the contents of every book they salvaged.[56][57]

At a certain point, Loki fell in love with Charlotte Lola, the 23rd daughter of Linlin, at first sight and was arranged to marry her. However, Lola wanted to choose her own husband and escaped the wedding. Linlin tried to fool Loki by passing Lola's twin sister, Chiffon, off as Lola's stand-in. The ruse was discovered, and the wedding was called off, further deepening the feud between Big Mom and the giants.[6]

14 years ago, Loki and Jarul arrived at Aurust Castle and witnessed Harald being impaled by his own soldiers. This led to a fierce battle where, during the ensuing conflict, Harald impaled Jarul through the head and attacked Shanks and Scopper Gaban, using the last traces of his sanity to order Loki to eat the legendary Devil Fruit that was passed down generations of the royal family. After complying and using the fruit's abilities to kill Harald, Loki took the surviving guards that remained and fled the country, allowing himself to be deemed the prime suspect of these incidents.[58][59] Six years ago, Loki was captured by Shanks and imprisoned at the base of the Adam Tree, bound by seastone chains.[60][61] It took all the warriors on the island to take Loki down and imprison him.[30]

Final Saga

Egghead Arc

Some time after setting off from Wano Country following the successful Raid on Onigashima, the Kid Pirates arrived at Elbaph.[13] The Red Hair Pirates were there at the same time, partying with the giants. After hearing that the Kid Pirates were attacking their subordinates, the Red Hair Pirates, alongside their fleet and the Giant Warrior Pirates, decided to face the Kid Pirates.[24] Before Eustass Kid could fire his Damned Punk, which would have killed numerous pirates and giants as well as destroyed parts of the coast, Shanks cut through the railgun and knocked out Kid and Killer. Dorry and Brogy then destroyed the Victoria Punk, ending the Kid Pirates' attempted assault on Elbaph.[62]

After the Egghead Incident, Scopper Gaban sat on the shore of Elbaph, drinking and waiting for someone's arrival.[63]

The Western Village throws a banquet to greet the Straw Hats.

Days after the Red Hair Pirates left, the Giant Warrior Pirates escorted the Straw Hat Pirates to Elbaph after helping them escape from Egghead. However, Road kidnapped the portion of the Straw Hats onboard the Thousand Sunny after they were incapacitated by the mists and placed them in his Land of Gods diorama. The Straw Hats soon escaped and headed toward the Sun World, though Luffy split off from them to explore the Underworld. There he met Loki, who made a deal with the pirate to free him in exchange for information on Shanks' whereabouts. Luffy then met Gerd and Goldberg while heading up to reunite with his crew, and the two giants helped the Straw Hats take down Road and punish him for kidnapping them. The group took a Svarr to the Western Village, where they reunited with the rest of the Straw Hats, who had just arrived. After becoming acquainted with the Owl Library and Walrus School, the Straw Hats took part in a banquet held by the Western Village.

At the same time, Figarland Shamrock and Manmayer Gunko of the Knights of God warped into Aurust Castle via Abyss and forced the guards there to divulge Loki's location. They approached Loki in the Underworld to invite him to join the Knights, but he refused, causing the duo to inflict severe wounds on him before moving on. Shamrock and Gunko then went forward with their next goal of spearheading the forcible annexation of Elbaph into the World Government, and Gunko summoned Shepherd Sommers and Rimoshifu Killingham to assist in the task while Shamrock was called back to Mary Geoise.

Despite hearing of Loki's crimes during the banquet, Luffy still wanted to free him. Zoro and Nami became aware of his objective and accompanied him to Aurust Castle to find the key, along with Road, who had been forced into Nami's servitude. Luffy's group reached Aurust Castle and found Scopper Gaban standing in the way of Loki's key, but after a brief clash with Luffy, Gaban allowed them to take it. Luffy and Zoro then went to free Loki, but Road soon revealed this plan to Gerd, causing the New Giant Warrior Pirates to head down and try to prevent Loki's liberation. Once partially unbound, Loki tried to hasten his escape by attacking the Sun World but then collapsed from his wounds.

Gunko, Sommers, and Killingham combined their Devil Fruit abilities to lead a group of Walrus schoolchildren toward a ship to be held hostage, while Killingham summoned nightmare creatures called MMA to occupy the giants. The Giant Warrior Pirates arrived to fight the MMA, but the villagers could not find a way to stop the schoolchildren, as they were overwhelmed by Sommers and Killingham. The children nearly walked into a blaze started by Loki in his attempt to escape, but it was put out by a group of the Straw Hats; however, Gunko then attacked and quickly neutralized the pirates. By threatening to kill one of the schoolchildren, the Knights were able to coerce Jarul into approving the burning of the Walrus School and Owl Library. Gaban arrived and managed to overpower Sommers, but was then defeated by Gunko and sent falling into the Underworld.

Although the Knights had the upper hand, Nerona Imu declared that the giants must be turned to the World Government's side as soon as possible and thus possessed Gunko. Within her body, Imu used his powers to transform the Giant Warrior Pirates into demons, causing them to start fighting against Elbaph. Wanting to help defend Elbaph against this assault, Loki confessed the truth about Harald's death to Hajrudin, and with the backing of Gaban, Hajrudin believed in his brother's innocence and so freed him. At the same time, Jarul revealed Loki's innocence to the populace and declared Elbaph's opposition to the World Government. At this point, the schoolchildren had nearly reached the Knights' escape ship, but an attack by the New Giant Warrior Pirates unwittingly destroyed it. Luffy and Loki then saved the children from falling off the edge as Loki flew up to the Sun World to join the fight.

Translation and Dub Issues

The name of the nation has variably been romanized as "Elbaph" and "Elbaf". The spelling "Elbaph" has been used by VIZ, 4Kids, and Crunchyroll, while the spelling "Elbaf" has been used by Funimation and most fan translations. For a long time, the spelling "Elbaf" was popular among fans due to a theory that it is derived from the word "fable" spelled backwards. At the beginning of the Elbaph Arc, the name was officially romanized as "ELBAPH" in the original Japanese version of Chapter 1130. This spelling would also be used on the sail of Harald's ship in Chapter 1153. However, in Chapter 1168, the ship's sail instead featured the spelling "ELBAF".

Harald Elbaph Ship
Harald's ship with the "ELBAPH" spelling.
Harald Elbaf Ship
Harald's ship with the "ELBAF" spelling.

In the live-action series, the Netflix subtitles use the spelling "Elbaph"; however, the Season 2 soundtrack uses "Elbaf" in its track titles and lyrics.
