Treasure Tree Adam is a fabled species of tree known for the exceptional strength of its wood. Although rare, several Adam trees exist around the world.[1][2]
Originally introduced through a tale told by Franky in the Post-Enies Lobby Arc, the tree would make brief appearances throughout the series until its proper full debut during the Elbaph Arc.
Overview
The Tree Adam's wood is considered the strongest, highest-quality wood in the world, with its immense rarity and difficulty of obtaining making it a highly valuable treasure. Occasionally, the wood is sold on the black market, at a very high price given its value. Franky managed to purchase some for
200,000,000 from the money he had stolen from the Straw Hat Pirates beforehand. Since Elbaph's Tree Adam is sacred to their culture, Franky figured the high price was due to the sheer difficulty of smuggling the wood from a country of Giants dedicating to protecting it.
Franky would build the Thousand Sunny using the Adam Tree's wood as its main material and gift the ship to the Straw Hats.[1] Aside from the Sunny, the only other known ship that uses this type of wood is the Oro Jackson, which carried the legendary Roger Pirates. The wood is capable of withstanding cannonballs and gun fire quite easily, showing little wear over time.[1] However, even ships built out of this wood need a good shipwright to look after them, as it is not completely invincible.
Despite the tree's legendary durability, it is still made of wood, and thus still vulnerable to intense fires, particularly when its branches become old and dry out.[3]
When the Sunlight Tree Eve was introduced, Usopp noted the connection between their names and wondered if the two trees were related.[4]
Known Adam Trees
Elbaph's Adam Tree
Elbaph's Tree Adam, with structures built into it.
Elbaph's Adam Tree is the oldest one in the world[2] by at least 3,000 years.[5] It is an ancient, colossal tree that grows at Elbaph's center, enveloping most of the island with its branches and sustaining the Warland Kingdom.[6]
Appearance-wise, the Treasure Tree Adam is a tree of absolutely enormous proportions, with height reaching beyond the clouds and width that rivals a whole mountain range. This tree is extremely important to Elbaph, as most of its inhabitants live above its branches and thus away from the desolate wilderness of the island's lower regions. It has two layers of branches, the middle level referred to as the Sun World, and a canopy level known as the Heaven World, while the island at the tree's base is referred to as the Underworld. Loki, one of Warland's princes and now a criminal outcast, has been chained to the tree's base for six years.
Elbaph's Adam Tree also depicts what appears to be past events from the Void Century and beyond through the Harley, a mural carved on its bark, supposedly by children from those times.
At some point, the branch holding the village of Haugen was struck by lightning, causing a fire that could not be extinguished. The giants were forced to cut it off to prevent it from spreading to the rest of the tree.[3]
Elbaph's Adam Tree also has a branch that has a 3,000-year-old facility located on it, whose origin is unknown even to the giants living on Elbaph.
The following events are non-canon, and therefore not considered part of the canon story.
Gran Tesoro's Adam Tree
The tree on Gran Tesoro.
Gran Tesoro's Adam Tree is located on the island's golf course. Unlike Elbaph's, it is significantly smaller, with foliage only at the top and no middle layer.[7]
Concludes non-canon section.
Trivia
- The Tree Adam is most likely a reference to the biblical story of Adam and Eve eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. This can be reinforced by the discovery of the Sunlight Tree Eve on Fish-Man Island.
- The Tree Adam may also be a reference to a real tree. A Giant Sequoia, named Adam, is over 200 years old and grows in the Sequoia National Forest in California. It is the 20th largest giant sequoia tree in the world.
- Tree Adam's role in Elbaph culture appears to mirror that of Yggdrasil, the World Tree from Norse mythology that supports multiple realms around its trunk and branches. Ironically, however, the Adam Tree does not appear to have any connection with the Yggdrasil of the Land of Gods besides Road's own attempts to emulate his country's culture.
