Ida[3] was a giantess hailing from Samuwanai Island in the South Blue who once worked at a circus in the Bunt Kingdom. She ran a notorious bar alongside Mato in Elbaph.

Ida was the unofficial mentor, advisor and long-time lover of King Harald of Elbaph, and the mother of his firstborn Hajrudin.[1] She was also the foster mother to Hajrudin's half-brother Prince Loki, after Loki's birth mother, Queen Estrid, disowned him and died.[4]

Ida passed away fifteen years ago after being poisoned by Estrid's relatives to prevent her from claiming the fortune they believed was entitled to their family,[5] which sent Loki into a murderous rage of revenge for his foster mother.

Appearance

Ida was a slender giant woman with average facial features, including freckles, full lips and a well-defined round nose. She had long, light-colored hair with a messy cowlick at the front, curly side locks and tied in a ponytail at the back.

Her debut outfit consisted of a simple X-strapped dark top with frills at the bottom and a pair of ragged shorts. After moving to Elbaph, she switched her top for a lighter-colored shirt.

While performing in the circus, she wore horns and a feathered coat, giving customers the perspective that she was a savage ancient giant.[1]

Personality

In stark contrast to the more militarist giants of Elbaph's past, Ida was an extraordinarily kind, caring, and well-read individual who compassionately valued all lives, no matter how small they may be. She despised arrogance, physically assaulting Harald once after he refused to help a few humans he had attacked. When given the option, she was more than willing to assist others, especially if they helped her in the past.[1] Her compassion would have a deep influence on Harald into becoming a benevolent and wise king.

Befitting her kind nature, Ida was quite tolerant, caring and protective of children, as seen in her interactions with Hajrudin, Mato and Loki. For example, she berated a fisherman for mentioning that he hesitated to save Loki's life. Afterward, she brushed off all of Loki's insults toward herself, instead chalking them up to him being "cute".

Ida's relationship with Harald began quite poorly. They first met when he "saved" (actually abducted) her from a circus act that he believed to be holding her against her will. She was disgusted by his arrogance, but managed to finally speak some sense into him, to the point where he was willing to apologize for his actions. They grew closer after helping rebuild Bunt and learning to interact with humans in peace. Ida's worldview was the key reason Harald decided to shift Elbaph's culture away from warmongering and toward diplomacy. The two spent at least 20 years together, traveling the seas, and gaining wisdom about the world in the process. They eventually had a child together, but due to Ida's "impure" blood, their marriage was unrecognized, which irked Harald but did not bother Ida, who was happy enough to simply be able to live near Harald and help him in his plans for their people. Even during Harald's arranged marriage to Estrid and the end of their time as lovers for such period, Ida still loved him.[1]

Hajrudin

Hajrudin is Ida's son. She loved him very much, although her babying annoyed him, due to his desire to be taken seriously as a warrior.[6] Hajrudin, however, was fiercely protective of his mother and did not tolerate insults towards her.[7] Hajrudin personally set sail in search of a doctor for her when Ida fell seriously ill, and tearfully mourned when she passed away.

Loki

In spite of having no blood relation with Loki, Ida doted on him as Harald's second son and Hajrudin's younger brother, being willing to invite the boy to live in her household and paying no attention to the way he would insult her, to the point she even considered his attitude adorable. Ida's affection would ultimately reach Loki, as he came to see her as the only mother he has (especially since his birth mother rejected him). When he learned the people of his birth mother's village poisoned her, he attacked them in anger and burned down the town for what they did to her.[4]

Bunt Kingdom

Ida was grateful to the kingdom for taking her in while she was at her lowest. She defended their honor when Harald insulted them, and later helped reconstruct the kingdom.[8]

Elbaph

Ida originally saw Elbaph as a place of nothing more than savages, that gave all giants a bad name. After moving there, her potential ascension to being queen was met with hostility; however, she was allowed to live among the common giants without complaint.[1] When the country was suffering from hunger and civil wars due to "Loki's Curse", Ida and Hajrudin - blamed per association and with a more vulnerable social status - were persecuted and attacked by rebel giants.[7]

Mato

An employee at Ida's bar from a young age, Mato was very emotionally attached to Ida, seeing her as a maternal figure. Mato cried when Loki was rude to Ida, who swiftly comforted the girl.[9] Mato stayed by Ida's side while bedridden, and under the older woman's care, Mato grew up enough to scold Loki when he called Ida a hag.[4] Mato would eventually inherit and run Ida's bar.[10]

Fisherman Village

The Fisherman Village took Ida in with open arms, giving her a home while the elders of Elbaph forbid her and Harald from marrying.[1] Despite the village's hospitality, Ida later moved to the Underworld to run her business.[7] Years later, Ida fell ill and was taken care of by the village doctor.[4]

Brewers Village

The Brewers Village was very hostile toward Ida, viewing her as a power hungry wench out to take to queenship from the late Estrid, to the point of poisoning her with a lethal toxin.[4]

Abilities and Powers

As a giant, Ida possessed greater strength and size than the average human and major life expectancy.

History

Biography

Ida was born on Samuwanai Island in the South Blue over 105 years ago. Eventually, she ended up adrift and on the brink of death, before being saved by residents of the Bunt Kingdom. After recovering, she became a circus performer, acting as a menacing giant for the show.

As fate would have it, she eventually crossed paths with Elbaph's arrogant King Harald. He had been under the misconception that she was held against her will, and quickly laid the entire kingdom to ruin in order to save her. Back on the ship, Ida smacked Harald for his cruel actions, shocking him. She demanded they return, and beat him again when he at first refused. She then berated him at his arrogant views toward the human residents, marking up his great strength and status to simply being born as lucky. She remarked that it was giants like him that made the rest of them be seen as monsters. Fortunately, Harald was willing to listen, and after returning, Ida got to work at helping rebuild. Harald had his subordinates assist as well, allowing Ida to introduce him to the king, and have him apologize. The two continued through the seas afterward, with Harald's previously arrogant nature fading as a result of Ida's mentoring.

105 years ago, after returning to Elbaph, Ida was happy to hear about Harald's new plans for the island. Said plans included traveling to learn about other cultures, establishing peaceful relations, and removing any barbaric old traditions. This led Ida to believe that Elbaph had been blessed. The two continued traveling together from there on, with Ida teaching Harald about how to conduct international relations. 81 years ago, their son Hajrudin was born. Although Harald intended to have her as his wife, Elbaph's residents refused to have an outsider as royalty. He angrily apologized for the tradition, but Ida was content living nearby, in Fisherman Village.

63 years ago, Harald's second son, Loki, was born to less-than forgiving conditions (thrown off the castle into Elbaph's Underworld by his mother). Ida offered to take Hajrudin to see his new half-brother, but he vehemently refused, on the grounds that Loki not being born from her meant he could not be his brother. Ida teased him for his views, much to his annoyance.[1] Soon after, in Harald's absence, severe weather events began to impact Elbaph, causing a large famine to sweep the island. Queen Estrid blamed Loki for said weather, attributing it to his "curse". Due to Hajrudin's blood relation to Loki, other giants saw him as a potential scapegoat for their problems. One giant in particular broke into Ida and Hajrudin's house, declaring that Hajrudin would serve as a sacrifice. Ida attempted to defend her son, but was quickly subdued as the other giant prepared to kill both of them. Fortunately, Harald arrived back on Elbaph with exceptional timing, and saved the pair from the attacker. Better yet, he had arrived with swathes of aid from surrounding nations, putting an end to the famine.

Sometime later, Ida established a bar on Elbaph's coastline. Although Hajrudin was concerned for her safety, Ida reassured him that the Underworld's beasts avoided the coastline. She explained that she was ready and willing to assist Harald's diplomatic efforts, and that all would be welcome in her business.[2]

Around 44 years ago, after Rocks D. Xebec had made an impression on the young prince Loki, Loki attempted to leave Elbaph on a ship he stole, so as to find Rocks at sea. Unfortunately for Loki, his large size was too much, and the boat capsized, forcing a nearby fisherman to rescue him. After the fisherman took him to Ida's bar to recover, Harald arrived to thank the fisherman and scold Loki for his carelessness. The fisherman remarked that he had hesitated on saving Loki at all, causing Ida to become outraged at such an attitude toward Loki. She berated the fisherman for his callousness on the matter, but stopped after Loki butted in and stated that he did not ask to be saved. Ida, having known Loki grew up without much parental attention, graciously offered Loki a place in she and Hajrudin's home. Both sons promptly rejected the very idea, with Loki taking it one step further by chalking up Ida's kindness to an ulterior motive, and calling her a gold digger. Although Harald was outraged by Loki's insults, Ida considered them to be cute. She then consoled a young Mato, who hated when Loki was mean toward Ida. With his insults having no effect, Loki declared that he had hated everyone present, and that he would one day leave Elbaph to see the world, just like Rocks.[9]

Sometime within the next two years, Rocks returned after Harald saved an unaffiliated nation from the World Government, prompting propaganda to be directed against him. The two met up at Ida's bar, as Harald did not wish for someone with such an infamous reputation to be seen in the mainland of Elbaph. Rocks attempted once more to convince Harald to join him, and when rejected, asked Ida to try to convince him. Although Ida agreed with Rocks, she believed that she had no say in the matter, and instead made a quip about Harald's insistence on affiliating with the government.[11] 40 years ago, following the end of Harald and Rocks' friendship, Ida noticed a sulking Loki and attempted to cheer him up by offering him juice.[12]

Ida left bedridden by an apparent illness.

15 years ago, Ida found herself unexpectedly ill, causing her to be bedridden. Her doctor recommended using their World Government contacts to find someone with better knowledge, but Ida refused, as she did not want to bother Harald, and believed she could recover on her own. Her doctor reminded her that she was getting weaker by the day, but Ida remained undeterred, and requested that Mato keep her tavern open, as she felt her efforts there helped improve Elbaph's standing with anyone who visited. Meanwhile, Loki arrived with a freshly-killed bull, ordering Mato to cook it up so that Ida could recover quicker. Ida considered all of their efforts to be unnecessary, but appreciated them nonetheless. Sometime afterward, Loki returned to his birth mother's hometown to discover that his extended family had actually poisoned Ida to stop her marriage to Harald, and that she had very little time left to live; Loki razed the village in anger and was jailed for his rampage, unable to help Ida. At the same time, Ida's condition worsened, forcing her doctor to send Mato to contact Harald.[4]

Fortunately, Harald was able to arrive back in time. The two happily discussed the positive impacts Harald's reforms had had on Elbaph, with Ida praising the new Walrus School. However, she voiced her disappointment at the newfound lack of a warrior culture, reminding Harald of the importance of Elbaph's own history. Harald rejected her concerns, reminding her that said culture was the entire reason the two could never officially marry. Ida considered Harald's insistence on marriage to be cute, and remarked on how Loki and Hajrudin had both become her sons. With her strength fading, Ida asked Harald if his plans for Elbaph were nearly complete. Harald, trying to keep things positive, declared that they nearly were, and once done, the two of them could travel the world freely, like they had done long before. Grabbing his hand, Ida informed Harald that she could not wait. A moment later, she peacefully passed away, a smile on her face.[5]

Her body was later buried somewhere on Elbaph.[5]

Legacy

Ida's life and death had the largest impact on Harald. He considered meeting her to be the biggest blessing he had ever received, and devoted the rest of his life to completing the reforms he had set out on nearly 100 years prior for her sake.[5]
